At the foot of 2nd street, where the Columbia River meets Astoria, Oregon, sits a local favorite known as the Ship Inn British Pub and Restaurant. Astoria’s Ship Inn has been serving up the freshest seafood with the best service since 1974.
Ship Inn is well known for their amazing seafood platters, which are made to order, and served fried golden brown, with fries, coleslaw and house-made tartar sauce. Their Halibut fish and chips is a customer favorite, and one of their most popular menu items. The Ship Inn menu is complete with amazing English specialties, cold and hot sandwiches, crisp salads and signature cocktails.
In 1971, owner, Jill Stokeld and her late husband Fenton Stokeld, visited Astoria, Oregon on a holiday trip to visit friends. They noticed a need for a good place to eat fish and chips, and decided that they should open a spot. In 1974, they leased a building on west marine drive known as “the mermaid Tavern”, a short time later they named it The Ship Inn. Both Jill and Fenton, who are originally from England, said there was a Ship Inn pub in every port town back home, which made the name fit perfectly. Fenton passed away in 2004 after 30 years of building up a great business and restaurant reputation, and Jill continues to be ever present in the business as the restaurant’s hostess on most evenings.
Over the past 41 years, the Ship Inn Restaurant has been a destination for tourist and a reliable favorite for locals. Their loyal customers love the Ship Inn’s Consistent quality just about as much as the amazing view. When asked “why Ocean Beauty”, Jill replies, “they have always treated us well, and have never had an issue with quality.” Come on down to the number one place to eat on 2nd street on the waterfront, and ask Jill to seat you next to the window.
