History and Ownership
Ocean Beauty began in 1910 as a storefront on the Seattle waterfront called the Washington Fish and Oyster Company.
Today Ocean Beauty is one of the largest seafood companies in the United States, operating nine domestic factories, eight distribution facilities across the western US, a sales office in Japan, and has co-packing relationships with processors in Asia, Europe, and South America.
Ocean Beauty Seafoods LLC is a privately held corporation, 50% owned by the Bristol Bay Economic Development Corporation (BBEDC), and 50% by a group of individual owners.
The group of individual owners are well capitalized and have decades of experience in the fish business. This, combined with their expertise in national and international business and finance, puts Ocean Beauty in an excellent position to tackle the challenges of the future.
The BBEDC is a Community Development Quota (CDQ) corporation, a not-for-profit company whose mission is to “Promote economic growth and opportunities for residents of BBEDC’s member communities through sustainable use of the Bering Sea resources”. Our goal is not only to run a profitable business, but also to help ensure the people we serve can maintain the culture and traditional way of life in remote Western Alaska. More about the BBEDC can be found at www.bbedc.com.
