Employment Information - Excursion Inlet Facility

Thank you for your interest in Ocean Beauty Seafoods, Inc. Excursion Inlet Facility. We are located approximately 40 air miles NW of Juneau, Alaska. Our primary salmon operations consist of canning, freezing, fresh, ikura (caviar) and value added products. The season generally runs from early July through end of August or early September. In response to the many requests for information and job opportunities, we've developed this site information for your perusal and to answer the most common questions.

NATURE OF WORK: Seafood processors perform a variety of tasks that may include the following: sliming, cutting, gutting, washing, cleaning, packing, grading, filling cans, loading, operating machinery, etc. Most of the jobs are in a cold, wet and noisy environment and include repetitive motion. Hours are long and days off are few. In short, the nature of the work is not glamorous, but can be rewarding and enjoyable.

HOURS OF WORK: While the hours and days worked are entirely dependent on products available for processing, Excursion Inlet has for several consecutive years enjoyed a high volume of product and corresponding work. However, workers must be prepared for erratic work hours, especially at the beginning and end of the fishing season. During the peak time of the season, it is not unusual for processors to work from 8-16 hours per day, again depending on the volume of product at the plant. When product is not available to process, work is suspended. While no assurances are made or implied, we expect our canning operations at the plant to be busy from the end of June until the end of August. Cold storage and egg operations typically run into September.

WHAT TO PACK: Workers should bring clothing that is appropriate for cold climate. This could include jeans, shirts, sweatshirts, hats, sweaters, coats, etc. The company will issue each employee the appropriate protective clothing required for their work assignment. This could include rubber boots, gloves, aprons, raingear, sleeves, hairnets, earplugs, etc. We do have a company store on site which has a limited amount of clothing, food and personal accessories.

WAGES: All processors are paid on an hourly wage basis. The starting wage is $7.15 per hour regular time with overtime paid after 40 hours per week at 1+1/2 times the regular rate or $10.725 per hour. Wage increases are determined by tenure, job responsibility, job performance and merit.

TRANSPORTATION: Upon successful completion of the season, Ocean Beauty will pay the round trip airfare. For an employee from the lower 48 states we provide transportation from Seattle. For Alaskan employees transportation is provided from Anchorage.

ROOM AND BOARD: Bunkhouse facilities are gender specific and available to all our employees. You will share your room with at least one other individual. The bunkhouses have restrooms, shower facilities, lounges, and laundry facilities available for your personal use. We provide linens, blankets, towels, etc. and these are laundered on a weekly basis. We have limited accommodations for married couples. Our mess hall is proximate to the plant and is used to feed all employees. There will be a $12 per day charge for room and board. This room and board charge will be completely refunded if the employee completes his or her seasonal contract with the company.

ZERO TOLERANCE: Possession of firearms, and/or use of illegal drugs on company premises (including company bunkhouses) is expressly prohibited and constitutes grounds for immediate dismissal. Harassment of any type is also prohibited and likewise constitutes grounds for termination. Ocean Beauty Seafoods reserves the right to perform random drug tests on their employees.

PROOF OF EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY IS A REQUIREMENT FOR EMPLOYMENT: We respect the law. Federal law and Immigration and Naturalization Services stipulate that we hire only lawful workers. This includes U.S. citizens and non-citizens with valid work authorization. You will be required to present documentation that will satisfy the law with regard to your eligibility to work in the United States. If you do not have this documentation or if it is unacceptable, you will not be allowed to work. In addition, beginning in 2006, Ocean Beauty will be doing background checks and drug tests on all new applicants.

  1. Ocean Beauty Seafoods, Inc. also requires new employees to submit their social security card within 10 days of hiring.
  2. Consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), applicants are requested to advise a prospective employer if an accommodation is necessary to participate in the application process and/or at the work site.
