Employment Information - Naknek Facility
Dear Applicant: Each year, Ocean Beauty Seafoods receives numerous requests for information and applications for seasonal employment as processors in our facilities in Alaska. In response to these requests, we've developed this web link, which generally answers the most often asked questions. The information on this site applies to our Naknek location only. PLANT LOCATION: Ocean Beauty Seafoods - Naknek is located in Naknek, a village in the Bristol Bay region of Alaska. (In addition, Ocean Beauty Seafoods operates facilities in these Alaska locations: Kodiak, Cordova, Petersburg, Alitak, Excursion Inlet, and Nikiski) SEASONS: Salmon season begins mid to late June until the end of July. NATURE OF WORK: With the addition of the new canning lines, we are looking for processors who are versatile and willing to perform a variety of tasks including (but not limited to) gutting, cleaning, packing, canning, and icing of seafood; operating various machinery; and general cleaning of work areas. Working conditions vary depending upon tasks assigned, which could include noisy areas where machines are operating, wet areas where seafood is cleaned, and cold areas such as walk-in freezers. Much of the work is repetitive due to mechanization and the large volumes of product processed. In short, the nature of the work is not glamorous. HOURS OF WORK: Most Alaska fisheries are highly regulated to provide for resource conservation. As a result, commercial fishing boats are frequently limited to fish on certain days of the week. The effect on seafood processing companies is that they operate when product is available and suspend operations when no product is available. Processors, therefore, must be prepared for highly erratic work schedules. There may be periods of no work, or minimal hours of work for a few days, to periods of 16 hours or more of work per day, seven days per week. Entire run failures are possible, so we make no guarantees of work hours. Further, production requirements may dictate a mid-season transfer to another Ocean Beauty work location. WAGES & TRANSPORTATION: Processors are paid an hourly wage of $7.15 for regular time, with time-and-one-half for overtime hours. The pay date is on the 25th of each month, and payroll advances are not permitted. So, we strongly suggest each employee bring some spending money for miscellaneous needs. The point of hire for Processors is at the plant location. The cost of transportation to and from the plant location is the responsibility of the individual hired. However, upon request, the company can arrange round trip transportation from Seattle to King Salmon, but will deduct this amount from the individual's wages. This deduction will be partially reimbursed with the successful completion of the employment term. The following is an outline of how Ocean Beauty Seafoods Naknek Facility handles wage & transportation costs (with signed request forms & successful completion of the season): · First Year Applicants: Wage @ $7.15 per hour
& Roundtrip ticket purchase, ½ of the ticket deducted from
the employee’s paycheck.
WHAT TO PACK: Workers should bring clothing that is appropriate for very cold climates. Employees should also bring their own knee-high rubber boots. The company supplies other work-related clothing, such as gloves, aprons, and rain-gear. Personal storage space is limited; therefore, we recommend the use of duffel bags or any other collapsible-type luggage. Bringing valuables such as jewelry, expensive radios, etc. is not recommended and is at the employee's risk. Employees are responsible for bringing their own personal hygiene items, towels, as well as an alarm clock. Bedding is provided but we recommend that you bring a sleeping bag for extra warmth. We also recommend that employees bring some spending money as it may be up to three weeks or more before a pay- check is issued. MEDICAL/DENTAL CARE: All applicants are advised that, if hired, they should plan ahead as medical and dental services are not readily available in the Naknek area. Only limited medical care is obtainable through a local clinic while dental services are offered only sporadically throughout the summer. HIRING: Prior seafood processing experience is desirable, but not required. Applicants under eighteen years of age are not considered for employment. We are reluctant to hire workers sight unseen, and therefore, require an in-person interview. If you are interested in working for our facility, please advise the employer as soon as possible so that you can participate in orientations and group interviews. Federal regulations require all employees to provide documents, which prove eligibility to work legally in the United States. Applicants must present these documents at the time of hire. PROOF OF EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY IS A REQUIREMENT FOR EMPLOYMENT. Ocean Beauty Seafoods also requires new employees to submit their social security card within 10 days of hiring. Consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act, applicants are requested to advise the company if an accommodation is necessary to participate in the application process. EOE ZERO TOLERANCE: Possession of firearms, use of alcohol and/or illegal drugs on company premises (including company bunkhouses) is not permitted and constitutes grounds for immediate dismissal. SUMMARY: Through this web site, we've
attempted to provide realistic information about seasonal employment.
We hope we've not painted an overly optimistic, or an overly pessimistic
picture. Individuals interested in working at our Naknek facility are encouraged to apply online using our Employment Application. We look forward to hearing from you!
